3 Common Myths About Alcohol with Eva Biringer
Drinking alcohol is often normalized and even celebrated, making it difficult to discern fact from fiction.
With us today is Eva Biringer, a journalist and writer based in Berlin and Vienna who recently published a book about women and drinking. A few weeks ago she talked with us about quitting alcohol. Today, she debunks three common clichés about alcohol that continue to perpetuate in our culture.
- "People who don’t drink are bores or killjoys"
One of the most common myths surrounding alcohol is that those who choose not to drink are boring or killjoys. Biringer notes that this stereotype is far from the truth, as there are plenty of fun and interesting people who choose not to drink. In fact, there are many reasons why someone may choose not to drink, such as personal beliefs, health concerns, or simply a preference for other beverages. - "It takes a good wine for a good meal"
Another common cliché about alcohol is that it takes a good wine to have a good meal. However, Biringer explains that this is simply not true. While a glass of wine may complement certain foods, it is not necessary to have a good meal. Additionally, there are many other non-alcoholic beverages, such as sparkling water or juice, that can also enhance the flavors of a meal. - "A glass of red wine is healthy” (It’s not.)
Lastly, many people believe that a glass of red wine is healthy, but Biringer warns that this is a dangerous myth. While there are some health benefits associated with moderate alcohol consumption, these benefits are quickly outweighed by the negative effects of alcohol consumption.
